You will receive (usually by mail) copies of the Quilt History, the Physical Documentation Form, the photograph and the release form. Each quilt or item also receives an Oregon Quilt Project registration number which should be sewn on the back of the quilt. Should the quilt go to another owner or location, the OQP registration number will allow the new owner to find the history of the quilt, either on-line (if you sign the release form) or by contacting the Willamette Heritage Center where the original records will be held.
This is a project of Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. The Index aims to be a central resource on quilts, quiltmakers and quiltmaking, across the United States. If you sign the release form for your documented quilts, the Oregon Quilt Project will forward the information collected in the Documentation Day, including the photo, to the Index.
Your address, phone number and email will NOT be visible in the on-line Index. If a researcher wishes to connect with a quilt owner, they must contact the Oregon Quilt Project. In turn, the OQP will share the inquiry with the quilt owner of record. The owner then decides whether or not to respond to the researcher.
By 2014, the Quilt Index housed information on more than 50,000 quilts! The information they have collected from other quilt projects, museums and private quilt owners is accessible on-line via the internet at no charge. The data can be searched in many ways, including documentation state, quilt design, or time period. There are also in-depth articles about some of the quilts that have been documented. In at least one instance, an mid-19th century quilt owned by an Oregon collector was “reconnected” with its twin, which remained with descendants of the original maker on the east coast of the United States.
This Quilt Index website currently features images and information, provided by an array of contributors, on thousands of quilts from documentation projects, museums, libraries, and private collections. The Quilt Index is a joint project of:
